Ben Lear on LILLIAN
The Awl: Your show uses the Pacific Garbage Patch as a metaphor for… I don’t want to say the Island of Misfit Toys but—
Ben Lear: Sort of that, yeah. The idea is, what if there was a place that held everything you ever lost: notes, harddrives, memories, and feelings? When you think back on the first person you ever loved, and how intense that feeling was, and now that feeling is completely… I have ex-girlfriends I’m friends with, and I can’t even possibly remember what that felt like. It’s crazy to me that that could have happened, and I have such little memory of it.

Interview with Hair Expert, Hayden Dunham
Antonio: What makes a curl curly?
Hayden: Hair that curls is actually very uptight and insecure. It loops around to grab other strands because it is needy and always reaching.
Antonio: Where does a curl go when its flattened out?
Hayden: It goes inside of itself. When it is flattened on purpose it is like forcing it to let go of all of its retentive habits and be limp and less mobile. I don’t know if it is a good thing. Sometimes those feelings are there for a reason.
Antonio: Why does it come back?
Hayden: It comes back because it misses the bounce. Being straight is less fun. Also even if you get to the root of it, you are not really changing the emotional disposition of the hair.
